VDE-SAT adds global communications to the world of VDES. With a standard ship VDES transceiver, it is possible to transmit data to a VDE-SAT satellite and receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The VDES Alliance publishes a list of satellites whose operators shared their data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to our members and some non-members, we today count 18 VDE-SAT satellites in orbit already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A recent survey performed by the VDES Alliance with its members and some non-members, the number of VDES Satellites will raise to numbers between 32 to 46 during the next 2 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With projects working on gateway interfaces that would allow the use of each others satellite networks for their customers, the VDES community could build a quite significant global coverage during the next 2 years, making VDES services extend from their coastal coverage into the oceans to allow communication with ships to extend far beyond the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The VDES alliance works towards a harmonization of the use of frequency ressources. Other organizations work on a standardized resource sharing interface which could be used to allow services to use multiple VDES satellite systems in the same way to create good service coverage for their region, or globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In contrast to other technologies, the ITU-R M.2092-2 does not contain any “SIM card” or subscription. Therefore, services can be provided without the need for a network subscription. Safety of Navigation services may use that model, to not exclude any ship from these important services, such as ice charts, weather forecasts, route optimization, VTS, AtoN, harbour arrival planning, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, identities can be exchanged for the authentication of VDES mobile stations or even users, and access can be controlled for those services that want to limit access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
