You may wonder how VDES will be able to display all the new data products that can be transported over it.
In MSC.530(106)/Rev. 1, IMO in May 2024 adopted to delegate to IHO the “Requirements for structure, format, encryption [and] presentation” of the “Electroninc navigational data services”, which is the data provided by authorities to be used on top of the actual navigational charts.
Examples are: dynamic Ice Information, Marine Weather, marine Aids to Navigation, Traffic Management, navigational Warnings, Surface Currents, Protected Areas, Radio Services, etc.

The transport of these new S-100 data formats on the ship is now defined through the SECOM Terminal Interface, as defined in IEC 63173-2 Ed. 2 CDV, Chapter 11. IMO MSC.530(106) requires this to be used.
So when we use VDES for the transport of S-100 we should consider this interface to the ECDIS/INS world, to allow the user to make use of that data.
The good news is that IHO also defines all about displaying, so that data and display definitions are together in the S-100 products, and it should be clear how that is done.
IALA S-230 may be the vessel to add VDES native messages (IALA R1027 VPFI) and VDES Application Specific Messages (ASM) to that model.
